The Monashees, Lumby & Area

Lumby, The Gateway To The Monashees

Monashee Mountains (muh-NA-shee) is a range of the Rocky Mountains that cover part of the southeast region of British Columbia, Canada.Between Revelstoke and Shuswap Lake, the range is crossed by Canadian Pacific RR. In the south part there is an important mining (gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc) region.

The Gold Range, to the east of Lumby, was officially changed to Monashee Mountains in 1918. Monashee comes from the Gaelic Monadh-sith, "mountain of peace". The name was given in about 1881 by Donald McIntyre, the highlander who first staked the Monashee Mines.

The Village of Lumby, Province of British Columbia, Canada is situated in the North Okanagan, but geographically, in the watershed of the Shuswap - Thompson - Fraser Rivers system. It is twenty five kilometres east of Vernon on Highway Six.

Although the village was incorporated in 1956, its history dates back to 1893 when the town site of forty acres was surveyed and named "Lumby". Prior to that, the small settlement of pioneer farmers and gold miners lived in White Valley, whose beginning commenced with the Cherry Creek gold strike of 1862.

Mr. Lumby was a native of England, coming from Nottinghamshire, where he was born about 1840, his father was a farmer. He came to BC about 1861. In 1862 he was in Cariboo, whence he returned to Victoria and afterwards became interested with Mr. Preston Bennett, in a farm on the South of the Thompson, nine miles above Duck's Station, and it was here that Mr. A. L. Fortune became first acquainted with him in 1866.

To Mr. Lumby's efforts is due the building of the S & O Railway for in the early 80's he began agitating the question and spent a great deal of time and moey in getting capitalists and the Government interested in the scheme. On the formation of the company in 1886 he was its first vice-president.

His accession to the position of Government agent at Vernon took place upon Mr. Dewdney's death in February 1892, and since he became a resident of the place no man has been more unselfish in his efforts to advance its interests. In his manner towards those with whom he came in contact he was less than some could wish, but his sturdy honesty and force of character always commanded respect.
